Heavy Duty Equipment Protection

Self-Activating Fire Protection for Heavy-Duty Engines, Machinery and Equipment

Image Links West Africa Limited – Thermoresponse Systems provides advanced automatic fire suppression solutions specifically designed to protect heavy-duty equipment, machinery, engines, generators, vehicles, and other high-risk enclosed compartments.

The Thermoresponse system provides rapid, automatic fire detection and suppression directly at the source of a developing fire. The system is designed for reliable operation in demanding industrial and mobile environments and can operate without electrical or pneumatic power for activation.

Its compact design, flexible detection tube, simple installation, low maintenance requirements, and rapid response make it an effective solution for protecting valuable equipment against fire-related damage and costly operational downtime.

How the Thermoresponse System Works

The system utilizes a heat-sensitive flexible detection tube installed strategically within the protected equipment compartment.

When the tube is exposed to excessive heat or direct flame, the section subjected to the highest temperature ruptures. This triggers the suppression system, causing the extinguishing agent to be discharged rapidly onto the fire.

The system therefore provides automatic detection and suppression at or close to the point of fire, without relying on conventional electrical smoke or heat detectors.

Direct Thermoresponse System

In the Direct Thermoresponse System, the heat-sensitive tube serves as both the fire detection device and discharge mechanism.

When the tube is exposed to intense heat, it ruptures at the point of highest temperature, creating a discharge opening. The suppression agent is then released directly through the ruptured section of the tube onto the fire.

This configuration is particularly suitable for localized hazards within engine compartments, generator compartments, machinery enclosures, and heavy-duty mobile equipment.

Indirect Thermoresponse System

In the Indirect Thermoresponse System, the heat-sensitive tube functions exclusively as the detection mechanism.

When the tube ruptures due to excessive heat, the resulting pressure drop activates the system valve. The suppression agent is then discharged through dedicated copper or stainless-steel pipework and strategically positioned discharge nozzles.

The indirect configuration is particularly suitable where multiple discharge points are required or where the protected compartment has a larger or more complex configuration.

Suppression Agents

Thermoresponse systems for heavy-duty equipment can be configured with different suppression agents based on the specific fire hazard, equipment type, enclosure configuration, and protection requirements.

  1. Dry Chemical Powder (DCP)

Dry Chemical Powder is particularly suitable for heavy-duty equipment where the primary fire hazards include diesel, petrol, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, combustible liquids, and other flammable materials.

DCP systems provide rapid flame knockdown and are well suited for:

  • Heavy-duty vehicles
  • Mining and construction equipment
  • Diesel engines
  • Generator compartments
  • Mobile machinery
  • Industrial engines
  • Fuel and oil-related hazards
  1. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

CO₂ fire suppression systems provide effective extinguishing for appropriate enclosed hazards and are particularly suitable where electrical and combustible-material hazards are present.

CO₂ may be applied to:

  • Generator compartments
  • Electrical equipment
  • Engine compartments
  • Industrial machinery
  • Enclosed equipment areas
  • Specialized heavy-duty equipment

CO₂ systems should be designed with appropriate consideration of personnel safety, enclosure integrity, ventilation, and applicable fire protection standards, particularly where personnel may be exposed to the discharge.

  1. Inert Gas

Inert gas suppression systems use gases such as Nitrogen (IG-100), Argon (IG-01), and Argon/Nitrogen blends such as IG-55 and IG-541 to reduce the oxygen concentration within a protected enclosure to a level that will not support combustion.

Inert gas systems are suitable for applications where a clean, residue-free suppression solution is required and may be considered for suitable enclosed equipment and machinery hazards.

Typical Applications

Thermoresponse Heavy-Duty Equipment Protection is suitable for a wide range of mobile and stationary equipment, including:

  • Heavy-duty engines
  • Mining equipment
  • Construction equipment
  • Earth-moving machinery

  • Industrial machinery
  • Engine compartments
  • Generator compartments
  • Hydraulic equipment
  • Compressors and mechanical equipment
  • Specialized industrial equipment
  • Other enclosed high-risk machinery

Protection of Engine and Equipment Compartments

Heavy-duty equipment often contains multiple potential ignition sources, including hot engine surfaces, exhaust systems, fuel lines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, lubricants, and combustible fluids.

Thermoresponse provides protection by positioning the heat-sensitive detection tube within the equipment compartment, allowing the system to respond rapidly when abnormal heat or flame is detected.

By initiating suppression at the source, the system can help prevent a localized fire from developing into a major equipment fire, reducing the potential for equipment loss, production downtime, and operational disruption.
